Shaun Cassidy Takes Mom Shirley Jones Out for Her 91st Birthday, Says 'The Sun Spins Around Her' (2025)

Oh, what a beautiful day — because Shirley Jones is 91!

Jones’ son Shaun Cassidy shared a sweet birthday post for his mom on Monday, March 31, including a picture of Jones with her birthday cake.

“Took mom out to lunch to celebrate her 91st trip around the sun, though I’ve often felt like the sun spins around her,” Shaun, 66, wrote. “Happy Birthday Mom!” He noted that she was born on that day in 1934.

Nancy Sinatra, Bernie Taupin and Kate Flannery were some of the celebrities that chimed in below the post with more birthday wishes. Jones’ son Patrick also commented on the post, writing, “I wish I could have been there with you and her. Love you y’all so much.” He shared his own tribute with his mom on his Instagram, writing, “She’s 91 today and our family is so grateful she is with us all to celebrate.”

On his Instagram Story, Shaun also shared a photo of his mom, himself and then-child star Ron Howard on the set of 1963’s The Courtship of Eddie's Father, which starred Jones, Howard and Glenn Ford.

Jones first found fame in the 1955 big-screen adaptation of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma!, her film debut. She played lead Laurey Williams. She went on to appear in the composers' Carousel as well as the musical films April Love and The Music Man. Having established herself as the wholesome, sweet leading lady, she played against type in 1960’s Elmer Gantry, playing a prostitute; the role won her an Oscar.

Beginning in 1970, she played the matriarch on The Partridge Family alongside her stepson David Cassidy (she married his father Jack Cassidy in 1956). The show ran for four seasons and helped launch David as a pop artist. Shaun also had a music career and even appeared on the cover of PEOPLE in 1978. David died in 2017.

Jones and Jack, who also share sons Patrick and Ryan, divorced in 1975. In 1977, she wed Marty Ingels; they were together until his death in 2015.

After The Partridge Family ended, Jones continued to work widely. In 2006, she received an Emmy nomination for the 2006 TV film Hidden Places; she received another (her third all-time) in 2010 for a guest role on The Cleaner. Her most recent role was in 2018’s Eco-Teens Save the World.

Last year for Jones’ 90th birthday, Shaun shared images from his mom’s intimate celebration. "Happy 90th birthday to Miss Pittsburgh!" he captioned the post, nodding to Jones' beauty pageant win back in 1952. "What an incredible night." She wore a blue jumpsuit alongside a crown and a sash that read “90 & Fabulous” while flanked by her sons.

Shaun wrote in a post on his website at the time, "In a journey full of dramatic highs and lows, mom has always been an optimist and a lover of life. Simple things mean the most to her: family, friends, nature, animals, laughter, sing-a-longs at the piano, a dry martini. Not necessarily in that order.”
